Factory Work in Chişinău is So Uplifting

During an otherwise ordinary weekend, I love discovering the existence of new third-world labor markets! (And so, I'm sure, does Gap, Inc.)

So, have you heard about this book, The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy?

Alls I know is that, almost 20 years on, I still find post-Soviet spellings of place names jolting. Those childhood years poring over the World Almanac really left a mark.

My friend Crystal used to do this great presentation about the global economy for children, asking them to look at their sneakers or t-shirts and talk about why those items were produced so far away. Didn't take long for those kids from the West side of Chicago to question why their parents didn't have work but their t-shirts were made so far away...

Don't get me started on this one. Banana Republic has to be the most unintentionally ironic name for a chain ever. Why not just call it Exploitation R Us?

This is why I generally like to buy my sweatshop/wagepoor-fashioned T-shirts in the thrift store. I feel less dirty that way.

And the people in these countries make such beautiful things too. I think they should be celebrated and acknowledged for that.
