Pools of sorrow waves of joy are drifting thorough my open mind

I couldn't help feeling that Across the Universe was slightly sentimental. However, I'm clearly in love with Jim Sturgess, who could send me all his lovin' any day -- or, just as satisfyingly, merely sing songs of Platonic devotion into my ear. Seriously, the music (especially Sturgess's warm, young, slightly raspy voice) and some of the imagery brought tears to my eyes. To the left is an audio-only YouTube clip.

... nothing's gonna change my world...

[PS: Portland photos may take longer than expected... software & hardware downloading problems. Drat. Oh well...]

That's one of the few positive reviews I've read about the flick.

Did you have plenty of clouds, caffeine and Powell's jaunts while in Stumptown?

Didn't even stop at Powell's (you've seen one book you've seen them all?). Truth is, we weren't in "shopping" mode and I can buy from them anytime online I guess...

Anyway, some of the better reviews on Metacritic (see my link) are worth seeing. It wasn't a "Great Film", but it had some good sequences for those of us weaned on MTV.

JunkThief, replace clouds, caffeine and books with sunshine, alcohol, and great meals, and you have our Portland trip.

While we wait for Joe's technical difficulties to iron themselves out, here's what I had to say about the journey: http://huntington.diaryland.com/071025_18.html

That was a good blow-by-blow account over on Huntington's blog. I look forward to photos. The "gay scene" in Portland seems to be intentionally lame as if they consider themselves above it. Powell's is always worth it to me, even though I never buy anything there just for a tangible encounter with actual pages in an independent bookseller space. Oh, and I'm glad to learn of your Max moniker.

JT: I dubbed our dear Kusala that when I first started blogging in 2000 and was giving everyone I wrote about pseudonyms. I only call him that en blague, and the custom is starting to seem a little silly. BUT...considering Sunday night at Silverado, maybe it has a new-found relevance if taken to mean MAXimum Alcohol Intake. ;-0

Is a little discretion too much to ask for, sweetness?

Okay, I won't share Huntington's reveal with the world. Guess what? My real name isn't Junk Thief.

I don't think revealing the pseudonym is what "Max" is talking about. Hey, you don't see me blogging about my alcohol-based, truly maudlin breakdown the night before, right? Some things are left to our friends to embarrass us by describing.

Okay, Huntington, I stand corrected, but lay off poor Max and let him retain some dignity.

I can't take what he lost so long ago. But you're right: that's his story to tell, even if "what happens in Portland stays in Portland" doesn't quite have the sinful ring to it that it might.

Besides, I think the true measure of MAXimum alcohol consumption is a bar set by someone else and his San Franciscan friends. I am a mere novice at this drinking sport of which you speak -- that's why my consumption was (and has been) such a disaster. Demon Rum! (or Scotch Whisky, as they case may be...)

Aw, don't be hating on the Angry Young Man for his excessive consumption. I'm sure he's just going through a phase. We all need our crutches.
