I did breathe a sigh of relief when I read the following at the website of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming:
Because of the significance of this trip, the air travel will be carbon offset through the Pacific Forest Trust - a forest conservation and stewardship project that will permanently reduce approximately 500,000 tons of CO2 emissions over a 100-year period. Speaker Pelosi will personally pay for this effort.I believe carbon offset fees in the long run probably will rival aid to the Central African Empire for sheer well-meaning ineffectiveness.

I'm sure the Greenlanders thought it was all a ploy by those meddlesome Danes trying to horn in on their newfound mineral wealth now that the ice is disappearing. You know they can graze sheep even further north than in decades now.
Did the folks with Code Pink know there was no one home while they were protesting outside of Casa de Pelosi?
I have a few friends in the responsible travel field that were promoting the carbon offset vouchers for air travel that was started ten or more years ago. I'd really not heard much more about it in recent yers. Its always felt like a guilt tax to me.
The weather in Godthab (I mean Nuuk) probably beat that which we "enjoyed" in San Francisco at the weekend. That Nancy is no fool.
well whether the carbon offsets actually accomplish anything or not, wouldn't it be great if all of the rainforest countries suddenly began preserving their trees rather than cutting them down? i sense an opportunity for capitalism, here, and one that would actually help the world rather than harm it. more trees = good thing.
